Wooden Sculptures

This precious collection of irreplaceable testimony of a distinctive and pre-eminent art in the Alpine area is located in the charming 16th-century rooms of the Prince-Bishop’s private apartments.

Artists of diverse origins reveal at times the suggestive style of the north, or the Lombard and Veneto influences, thus interpreting the two peoples that have always cohabitated this geographic area between Italy and the Empire.

The art on exhibit dates from the 14th to the 17th centuries and follows both a chronological and thematic path.

Of note are the small Romanesque Madonnas, that are among the most ancient wood sculptures in existence in the Trentino and Alto Adige area; the elegant late-Gothic “Beautiful Madonnas”, of Swabian and Bohemian influence; the moving Annunciazione by the Brescian Maffeo Olivieri; the regal female figures by Jorg Atz; and the captivating narrations in relief by Narciso da Bolzano and his brilliant and prolific school.
