Accessibility
The Museum is committed to continuously improving and enhancing the conditions that make its heritage accessible to all visitors in every form – physical, sensory, and cognitive – through the developments of tools, initiatives, and museum proposals.
Over the years, the museum’s Educational Services have addressed the issue of accessibility by implementing projects and identifying diverse strategies and actions by type of audience, also involving and collaborating with local organisations working in the field of disability.

SENSORY
ACCESSIBILITY
To support accessibility and usability for people with visual and hearing impairments, projects have been launched over the years in collaboration with ENS – the National Association of the Deaf, Unione Italiana Ciechi e Ipovedenti (the Italian Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted), Abilnova, and CIMeC – the Interdepartmental Mind/Brain Centre of the University of Trento. At the start of the tour in Buonconsiglio Castle, a multisensory model of the monument is available, allowing visitors to explore its architectural development through audio-guided tactile exploration and tactile tablets featuring the building’s façades. A subtitled video in LIS – Italian Sign Language is also available. An app for visiting the castle featuring audio content for blind visitors and LIS content is available. The Educational Services also offer dedicated guided tours led by specialised museum educators.
COGNITIVE
ACCESSIBILITY
The Educational Services provide a range of tools and visit formats tailored to different age groups and museum audiences, available both by booking and through periodic scheduling, with the aim of responding to different visiting and learning styles and needs. There is an ongoing commitment to ensuring that museum communication is clear, simplified and understandable to all, including in ‘Easy to Read’ and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) formats.
PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
PROJECTS
In recent years, particular attention has been devoted to visitors with disabilities. The museum sites – historical fortresses of the area – unfortunately have limited or challenging physical accessibility for anyone with mobility difficulties. Over the years, the Educational Services have addressed the issue of the accessibility of the museum by developing projects and differentiated strategies for different groups of visitors, aiming to provide suitable responses through methodological research and audience development approaches.
Projects for visitors with visual impairments
Following initial pilot activities, in 2006 the Educational Services formalised systematic collaboration with the Italian Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted (Trento section) to design guided visits to the museum sites and temporary exhibitions, periodically offered to visitors with visual impairments. These activities are designed and led by a museum educator with specific expertise.
The 2006 project, developed during the exhibition Romanino. Un pittore in rivolta nel Rinascimento italiano (Romanino: A Painter in Revolt in the Italian Renaissance), included a study on the needs and museum perception of visitors with visual impairments and the subsequent design and implementation of a tailored visit proposal.
More recently, in January 2018, a new project titled conTATTO al museo was launched, again in collaboration with the Italian Union of the Blind and Partially Sighted, involving focus groups to update needs and expectations of this audience with regard to the museum proposal, especially in the context of an important project aimed at redesigning and redefining the museum itinerary at Buonconsiglio Castle.
specificaMENTEperVOI
In 2011, a project was launched for people with psychophysical disabilities and those experiencing mental health difficulties. The initiative, which involves multiple local organisations, is structured into various diversified and specific proposals. These are aimed, above all, at utilising cultural heritage as a resource for well-being and for the construction of a sense of belonging and citizenship.
