VISITA IL PIANO TERRA DI CASTEL THUN
THE INNER COURTYARD
Decorated with Renaissance frescoes in Nordic style and dominated by the large family coat of arms, dated 1585, the entrance hall leads to the manor house; a vegetation-smothered pergola, partly lost, completely covers the ceiling vault, where, among pine cones, grapes, pomegranates, pumpkins, pears, chestnuts and various kinds of flowers, a solitary bird is perched. |

THE CHAPEL OF ST. GEORGE
Like every aristocratic residence, Thun Castle also has a place of private worship, consecrated in 1504 and entirely decorated by an artist of Bavarian origin, Konrad Waider, with a vast pictorial cycle of sacred subjects in Nordic style. According to a complex iconographic programme, scenes from the life of Saint Barbara alternate, culminating in the scene of her martyrdom, a crowded Crucifixion, and the Last Judgement. On the ceiling, in elaborate Gothic-style frames, alternate images of evangelists, doctors of the Church and saints. |

THE ARMOURY
Traditionally called the ‘Hall of Guards’ or the ‘Knights’ Hall’, this is one of the palace’s largest and most impressive rooms. Severe in form and decoration, it has a large fireplace and preserves two large stone basins for storing food supplies, dated 1563 and 1564 and decorated with the Thun coat of arms quartered with those of other noble families. From here you can reach the room with the oven used for baking bread and the Pistoria, where the flour was stored, and the dough was prepared. |

OLD KITCHEN AND TINELLO
The kitchen, furnished with crockery and utensils, is a charming place in an old-fashioned style, with an imposing fireplace covered by a large hood and sinks carved out of stone. It opens directly into the tinello which, entirely panelled in wood and heated by a masonry stove, was a cosy place reserved for meals. It too is furnished with Thun family heirlooms, outstanding among which are the curious chandelier in Tyrolean style and the collection of pewter. On the same floor, a more modern and functional kitchen, built in the 20th century by the new owners, the Thun family of Bohemia, is equipped with a large wood burning stove, a technological achievement of the time. |
